Part V — Casual & Contemporary Styles
Chapter 26: Joggers & Athleisure Trousers
The jogger and its broader athleisure category represent the most significant silhouette-and-values shift of the contemporary period, as introduced in Chapter 5: the treatment of comfort as a primary style value rather than a compromise.
Defining Characteristics
A jogger is typically characterized by an elasticized or drawstring waistband, a tapered leg, and — most distinctively — an elasticized or ribbed cuff at the hem, a detail borrowed directly from athletic sweatpants. This cuffed hem is the single feature that most reliably distinguishes a "jogger" from other tapered casual trousers.
Fabric and Construction
Joggers are most commonly constructed from knit fabrics — French terry, fleece, or jersey — rather than the woven fabrics that dominate tailored and casual woven trousers (Part III). Knit construction offers inherent stretch and drape without requiring elastane blending, along with a soft hand well suited to all-day comfort wear.
The Athleisure Category Beyond Joggers
"Athleisure" more broadly encompasses a range of trouser styles beyond the classic jogger, including wide-leg knit trousers, soft ponte-knit tailored-look trousers (Chapter 17), and technical performance leggings and trousers designed for both athletic activity and everyday wear.
Styling Athleisure Beyond the Gym
The defining feature of the athleisure shift is not the garments themselves but their context: joggers and athleisure trousers, once confined strictly to athletic or lounging contexts, are now styled with blazers, structured tops, and heeled shoes for a deliberately elevated "smart-athleisure" look, particularly in remote and hybrid work contexts discussed in Chapter 5.
Styling Tip: Pairing a soft, relaxed jogger with one structured element elsewhere in the outfit — a blazer, a heeled boot, a fitted top — is the most reliable formula for elevating athleisure beyond purely loungewear territory.
