Part VIII — Construction Techniques

Chapter 44: Pocket Construction (Welt, Slant, Patch)

Pockets serve both functional and stylistic roles in trouser design, and their construction method significantly affects both appearance and durability.

Welt Pockets

A welt pocket is constructed with a narrow, reinforced fabric strip (the "welt") framing a slit opening, with the pocket bag itself concealed entirely inside the garment. Welt pockets — particularly the "besom" or double-welt variation — are associated with tailored, formal trousers (Chapter 19) for their clean, minimal exterior appearance, but are among the more technically demanding pocket constructions to execute well.

Slant (Scoop) Pockets

A slant pocket, common on casual and tailored trousers alike, is set into a diagonal opening along the front side seam area, with the pocket bag falling behind the front panel. This is among the most common pocket styles in mainstream trouser construction, offering easy hand access and a relatively simple, durable construction method.

Patch Pockets

A patch pocket is a separate piece of fabric stitched directly onto the outside surface of the trouser, fully visible as an applied element rather than set into a seam or slit. Patch pockets are the defining pocket style of cargo trousers (Chapter 27) and are common more generally on casual trouser styles, valued for their straightforward construction and visible, sometimes decorative presence.

Cargo and Utility Pocket Variations

Building on the basic patch pocket, cargo-style utility pockets frequently add pleats or gussets (allowing the pocket to expand when filled), flap closures (for secured storage), and reinforced corners or bar-tacks at stress points, reflecting their functional, load-bearing purpose discussed in Chapter 27.

Pocket Placement and Fit

Pocket placement affects fit as much as construction method — a pocket opening cut on the bias (diagonal to the fabric grain) will behave differently under stress than one cut on the straight grain, and pocket bags cut from lightweight lining fabric rather than the garment's main fabric reduce bulk at the hip, a detail particularly relevant for fitted or tapered silhouettes (Chapter 9).
